Cas Walker was unlike any businessman in Knoxville in the 20th century. In fact, since. He was a grocer-politician-media celebrity-music promoter whose colorful life has fueled the region’s favorite urban legends. He made his fortune as a grocer and found his way to local variety shows to promote his growing grocery chain. His shows soon hosted the likes of Dolly Parton, Chet Atkins and Bill Monroe. The book gathers interviews, newspaper accounts, Walker’s own autobiography and other sources to present an engaging portrait of a man with a checkered legacy. I was inspired by the vibrant letterpress posters of Southern music shows with bold typography and classic Southern aesthetics.
